Emma Sulkowicz is a senior Visual Arts major at Columbia University. Emma was raped at the beginning of her junior year. Emma has gone to both the school and the police and gotten little support or results, despite the fact that her rapist has been accused by two other women at the University. For the remainder of her time at Columbia, she will be planning to carry her dorm room mattress with her everywhere she goes for as long as she and her rapist attend the same school.

"A matress is a perfect size for me to just be able to carry it enough that I can continue with my day, but also heavy enough that I have to continually struggle with it."

This week, a group of students got together in show of solidarity with Emma and helped her carry her mattress around.

The idea being that if they helped "carry the weight together" the community could demonstrate their support for victims and survivors of sexual assault, and lend voices to the cry for appropriate action from the university.
